5 Things I Wish I Would Have Done Throughout High School

1. Met more people outside my core group of friends
It's easy to become really comfortable with a group of people and feel like you don't need to know anyone else. You should always be accepting of meeting new people outside your core groups and expanding your networks. You never know what you can learn from students with other interests and experiences!
2. Joined clubs just for the fun of it
In high school you will surely be very busy with academics and your main extra-curricular activities. Extra-curriculars, whether they be honor societies, sports, or other clubs, take a lot of time and dedication, especially if you're an officer. I do believe, however, that you should join at least one club simply because it makes you happy. For instance, if art is something you enjoy and you want to join the art club, make the time to do so. Don’t use the excuse of “I don’t have time,” because surely you have an hour to spare a week. In the midst of things, it is essential to have something that makes you happy just because.
3. Taken a class outside my comfort zone
You should take advantage of your time in high school to explore the wide range of classes available to you. We're very lucky that at Mater we have such a variety of classes available to us, so take advantage! Don't be caught up strictly in Science classes because you are convinced you'll major is a STEM area- take your four years at Mater to really explore the options available to you- you never know what will spark your interest. For instance, I wish I would have taken Ms. Portela's AP Spanish Literature class (and I think I would have enjoyed it a lot) but out of fear that I would not have done well, I never took it. Put your fear to the side and take a chance- you never know what can come out of it.
4. Been unafraid to speak with upperclassmen and ask questions
Upperclassmen are THE group of people who went through the same experiences you are going through, faced the same choices and doubts, and learned from their experiences. If you ever need advice or have questions, do not be scared to reach out to them! Take advantage of classes with a mix of students from all grade levels and use the wisdom of older students so you do not repeat their mistakes. As you get closer to applying to college, keep in mind that there are Mater alumni EVERYWHERE so don’t be shy about asking Ms. Macho for their contact info to ask questions.
5. Tried a sport
Sigh... sports. As someone who is anything but athletic, I've always been opposed to trying any sport, but my good friend and fellow mentor, Rosario, shared this is one thing she regrets not doing. She believes that by participating in a sport she would have "been exposed to a different group of people and gained a skill." I agree, and would like to add that it's also a great way to incorporate exercise in your life (which helps relieve stress!) to stay healthy. So, even if you're reluctant, at least try out for a sport and see how it goes. Even if it goes not too well, at least you'll have a funny story to tell your friends.
Learn from seniors' mistakes and take a chance! I guarantee your high school experience will be that much more memorable.
All the best,
Laura
